Gentle Summer Fitness: Workouts That Won’t Wipe You Out

Summer is a great time to stay active, but it’s not the season to push yourself to exhaustion. Instead of high-intensity workouts, opt for gentle, low-impact movement that keeps your body strong without draining your energy.
Walking: Walking is one of the most effective summer exercises. Early morning or evening strolls help you avoid peak heat while improving cardiovascular health and boosting your mood. At The Vista, join the community’s Walking Group and enjoy relaxed strolls through The Vista’s beautifully maintained grounds three mornings a week.
Swimming: This summer favorite provides a full-body workout while keeping you cool. Whether in a pool, in a lake, or at the beach, swimming is easy on the joints and excellent for building endurance and strength without overheating. At The Vista’s Reach Aquatic Center, residents can enjoy the indoor pool year-round as well as weekly aqua exercise classes.
Yoga: Ideal for maintaining flexibility and core strength, yoga improve balances, posture, and muscle tone without excessive strain and can be done indoors with air-conditioning or outdoors in a shaded space. The Vista offers a variety of low-impact fitness classes, such as Yoga and Senior Fitness, for staying active safely in the summer.
Light strength training: Gentle exercises using resistance bands or light dumbbells is another great way to stay fit in the summer. Focus on controlled movements, proper form, and shorter sets with sufficient rest in between. The Fitness Center at The Vista features a cardio area and weight studio with state-of-the-art equipment for residents to freely work out on their own or with a physical trainer.
Stay Safe in the Heat
Exercising in hot weather requires a little extra awareness. High temperatures and humidity strain your body faster than you realize, so being proactive helps prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration.
- Hydrate before, during, and after exercise.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
- Avoid midday sun (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
- Listen to your body: dizziness, nausea, or headaches are signs to stop.
- Take breaks and prioritize recovery.
Summer workouts don’t have to be extreme to be effective. By choosing gentler exercise and being mindful of the heat, you can stay active, energized, and healthy all season long.
