The Importance of Wellness at The Vista
Staying active, prioritizing your physical health, and nurturing your mental well-being are all important factors in improving your quality of life and enhancing your overall happiness in retirement. At The Vista, Bergen County’s premier continuing care retirement community, our diverse fitness classes, first-class amenities, and comprehensive wellness services all help our residents enjoy a vibrant lifestyle each day.
Cultivating a Vibrant Lifestyle
The team at The Vista consistently prioritizes resident needs and works hard to create an environment that engages, inspires, and fosters good health.
“The connection between the mind and the body is clear,” said Maria Houston, Wellness Coordinator at The Vista. “Physical activity, mental stimulation, and excellent medical care are all major components of the daily lives of our residents. We receive constant feedback from residents that indicates they truly enjoy taking part in all aspects of our wellness programs, which keep them thriving.”
Maria’s role is multifaceted – she cultivates a culture of wellness for her residents in various ways, such as overseeing fitness classes, developing innovative programs that meet resident needs and preferences, promoting wellness through educational presentations, and performing wellness checks as needed to ensure residents are thriving. “Residents can reach out to me any time to discuss any health concerns,” she said.
Fun Fitness Classes
Exercise is one of the most important ways to maintain mobility, good health, and mental clarity. The Vista offers a wide range of fitness classes and activities for all levels, which allows residents to enjoy their favorite form of exercise in an engaging, social setting. Whether Vista residents love to get up and move with low-impact cardio or enjoy the health benefits of stretching and meditation, The Vista offers a class to suit their needs and goals.
Classes offered at The Vista include:
- Chair-ercise: A completely seated, chair-based exercise program that’s designed to improve flexibility, strength, and endurance for all major muscle groups
- Senior Fitness: A fun class featuring low-impact cardio combined with exercises to increase strength, flexibility, balance, and stamina

Swim Your Way to Wellness
Swimming is a great workout because it is low impact, poses minimal injury risk, and works every muscle group in the body, making it a safe and effective way to stay in shape. At The Vista’s Reach Aquatic Center, residents can enjoy the indoor heated pool year-round and swim to improve heart health, flexibility, and muscle strength – as well as boost their mental wellness! Studies indicate that taking a dip reduces levels of the hormone cortisol, which in turn relieves stress and improves mood.
Other features of the Reach Aquatic Center include:
- A whirlpool spa: Besides being relaxing, spending time in a whirlpool spa has many benefits, including improved sleep, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and lower blood pressure.
- A sauna: Sitting in the dry heat of sauna may help reduce stress, improve heart health and relieve pain.
- Weekly aqua exercise classes: Residents can enjoy this water-based class for a low-impact workout.
